Second fish festival in Protaras

Larnaca District Development Agency with the support of Paralimni Municipality, the Cypriot Mariculture Association and the Local Association of Paralimni Professional Fisherman organized the 2nd Fish Festival at Protaras on August 30, 2014.

The event aimed to promote fresh fishery and aquaculture local products, to increase awareness of the health benefits of eating fishery products, as well as to promote the fisheries activities in the Municipality of Paralimni. Also, the event aimed to promote traditional products and local activities in the rural Larnaca and Famagusta.

Visitors had the chance to taste free samples of fresh fish, and to be familiar with the daily activities of a professional fisherman and the difficulties that fishers face. There were also demonstration stands for showing traditional handjobs in Cyprus, such as making chairs, tsesto and potteries, as well as market stands for selling several traditional Cypriot products, such as halloumi cheese, spoon sweets, honey taro, wine, aromatic and medicinal plants and Cyprus coffee. Seafood recipes were also presented by the famous chef Christo Christodoulou.

Traditional music and dance were performed by the Cultural Workshop ‘Para ti Limni'. The minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment Mr. Nicos Kouyialis officiated the opening ceremony of the Fish Festival.

The big turnout (approximately 8,500 visitors) and the strong interest in local traditional activities provide evidence of achievement.

The event was co-funded by the European Fisheries Fund 2007-2013 and the Republic of Cyprus.
